GEL

What is gel?

Gel concentrate, made up primarily of water and super absorbent polymers, transforms water into a fire preventing and heat absorbing gel that will adhere to virtually any surface.

How does it work?

Gel creates a blanket of protection that cools and protects objects from heating, charring and flame impingement.  It can also be used to bring fires under control more quickly.

Is it safe for plants and animals?

Yes.  Thermo-Gel® is U.S. Forest Service approved, non toxic and UV degradable.*

What is the shelf life of gel concentrate?

Thermo-Gel® is guaranteed for 3 years.*

Are there specific requirements for gel concentrate storage?

Gel concentrate should be stored above freezing and below 104°, preferably in a place without direct UV exposure.  The gel must be kept tightly closed and agitated every three months.

Can gel concentrate be mixed with salt water?

No.

How long will protection last?

Once applied, gel will last several hours depending on conditions.  Gel can be rehydrated by applying a light misting of water, extending the protection.

How much gel concentrate does it take to protect a structure?

Approximately 5 gallons of gel concentrate and 300 gallons of water will coat a standard 2500 square foot structure.*

Can gel be used to create a fire break?

Yes.   Make sure all combustible materials such as grass, branches and foliage are well covered with a wet, milky solution.

Can gel be used to extinguish fires?

Yes.  It is very effective in suppressing Class A fires.

What about liquid combustibles like petroleum or diesel?

No.  Thermo-Gel® is a Class A fire additive and is not designed for Class B pool fires.

How do I remove gel?

Gel may be washed off by over-hydrating with plain water at low pressure.

 When should gel be applied?

Apply gel in advance of the fire, allowing ample time for safe evacuation.

Does using gel save water?

Yes.  Gel prevents water runoff and uses 55% less water than foam.

DakotaFire Delivery Systems

Can I mix different brands of gel?

Absolutely not.

Is the system effective for both structure protection and suppression?

Yes.

Does elevation, temperature or water quality affect the performance?

No.  DakotaFire's system will perform reliably regardless of conditions.

Is it necessary to clean out the gel line?

No, the system is self sealing and only requires monthly re-circulation.

Can gel concentrate and water be pre-mixed in the tank?

No.  The gel concentrate and water must remain in separate lines until they are mixed in the nozzle at the end of the line.  Pre mixed gel will become too thick to spray and will block the system.

How much does a system weigh?

Please refer to product specifications.

*Specifications and/or recommendations differ by gel manufacturer.
